You’ve gone on holidays hoping your skin will be looking great as you hit the beach, but then, within a few days you start seeing pimples appear – why?

According to a quick poll we ran 71% of respondents said this affected them and as GP Dr Unnati Desai explains, there are a few reasons for these annoying Summer spots and, fortunately, some simple solutions.

Causes

1. Sweat: In hotter climes we sweat more and sweat can clog our pores resulting in breakouts. (This is often the case for forehead breakouts when you’re wearing a hat.)

2. Sunscreens often these can be quite heavy and greasy, clogging pores and can lead to breakouts (not to mention prickly heat – that itchy, red rash that often happens in summer.)

3. A change in our skincare routine we might not be quite as diligent when we’re away in taking make up of or general cleansing while we’re on holidays.

Solutions

So, what can you do to help prevent these spots or get rid of them fast?

1.Take a Glycolic Acid based cleanser with you to help keep the pores clear. I’m a big fan of Tebiskin products and their Gly-Clean is excellent.

2. Look for a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic – that is, it won’t clog pores. Make sure it’s still got a high protection factor – a SPF of at least 30 and a 4-5 star UVA rating. (Editors note: A couple of good examples are Evy Technology and Tancream)

3. Wash your hat or the band inside it at night to reduce bacteria build up, and also make sure your mobile phone screen is clean too as it’s a major source of bacteria that can aggravate the skin and cause breakouts.

4. If you’re sweating a lot carry some micellar wipes or a damp cloth with you to wipe your forehead every so often. (Remember to re-apply your sunscreen!)

5. If you’re using a heavy moisturiser at home, consider swapping for a lighter, non- comedogenic one while you’re away.

6. Try to stick to a good skin care routine of cleansing and moisturising your skin as you would at home.

7. If you have acne or rosacea already consider using a non-comedogenic moisturiser with a good SPF for your general daily use and, remember, the sun can be a trigger for rosacea flare ups.

8. Have a happy holiday!.
